Look out! New website coming up

NielsAll53 Comments

Hi everyone!

Just a quick update about what I’ve been up to lately. 🙂

Lots of thoughts, lots of research, lots of planning. – And a brand new Animation Paper website is coming up very soon!

The new website will keep this blog intact with the current posts for historic reasons – and for new interested people to be able to dive into my original vision and thoughts.

Also all your comments will be kept as is – especially because they are valuable input and nice for others to search and read.

The new site is much clearer and to the point. Hopefully it will sell the idea of our new favorite animation tool better – and also it will fit the style of our new Kickstarter campaign coming up in a couple of months. Exact date for when the Kickstarter opens is still to be announced.

So, see you all on the other side! Updated animationpaper.com in only days from now.

Stay tuned!
– Niels

  1. Yes! That’s awesome to hear Mr. Niels. I was just coming around to see how things were and I see this great news, glad to hear about a new site and hope for a Kickstarter campaign. I know it’s going to be great, and when the campaign comes out I’m going to share and support like never before, I think fondly of this software all the time.

  2. Soooo excited for this! I’ve been checking this site for over a year now and I’m so excited to see some new development! If you really are planning to start a Kickstarter, a good place to start might be Prefundia. It would help you get the word out before you actually launch it.

  3. I’m so excited to see this program done. I got goosebumps just watching the video tour. I love the old version, but this program seems to be where it’s at.
I will share this every day if I have to. I’ve got quite a few friends that would be down for this. Please keep us updated! <3

  4. Hey! I thought this blog was dead, after the crowdfunding didn’t go as planned… so glad to see that theres still hope for a future for PAP! it’s an amazing program,

  5. I only recently found out about this software maybe two weeks ago and signed up so I can stay updated for the Kickstarter. As a full time freelancer, the idea of getting a digital version of what we love about traditional methods in animation made me sing to the heavens. Enough of Flash. Enough of Toonboom. I need Animation Paper.

Though I really hope you call it PAP 2.0 or some equivalent. I came across it by complete accident. I never would have found it if I simply googled “Animation Paper.”

Anyway, I can’t wait till you post another update. I will personally spread the Kickstarter campaign like wildfire on my website and the entire nebulous of social media. 😀

  6. Holy cow, you’re right. I must have made a typo.

But I was indeed actually shopping for ‘animation paper’ and ended up sifting through some artist blogs. That’s when I stumbled upon a post of yours and found out about this software.

And in the humblest, more respectful way possible… I daresay yes, I feel the name is a bit generic. Whereas Plastic Animation Paper, or PAP as it’s been affectionately called, I think immediately encompasses its design and purpose better than simply “Animation Paper.”

After all, aren’t all wacom tablets our ‘plastic paper’? 🙂

In the end though, who am I to be finicky about a name? You folks are daring to create something excellent that artists have been voicing their desire for ever since ToonBoom’s rapid takeover–and at an amazing price to boot. I’ve been checking back every few days. I can’t tell you how excited I am, and I think I speak for many in that regard!

Thanks – your thoughts are much appreciated!

Wacom tablets are our “plastic paper” – that’s exactly the thought behind the old PAP name. For the new one I just wanted it to be simpler – also to reflect the vision behind everything being straight forward in the workflow, the GUI, etc. And today, Animation Paper (the software) I hope will become the modern equivalent to the analogue old fashioned animation paper. 🙂 Anyway… 😉

  7. Niels, do you have a tentative timeline? I teach HS courses in digital animation and would love to use this. We use Macs. The new course won’t be offered until August of 2016.

Thanks for the hard work! Again. Excited.

Hi – yes, my plan is to get a Kickstarter going very soon. And with the funding for both Mac and Windows version secured the actual programming will commence. Then it will take 6-8 months to reach the very first test versions. A couple of months more before beta versions. So it will realistically take about a year after funding for AP to be completed and selling online.

      Thanks,
      Niels

    1. Most of it is ready to go live – I only need a few things like editing a video to go on the site. This is on me, but I have been super busy with other projects so it has been a bit of a challenge for me to get time for it allocated. Will be soon now though (days/weeks). 🙂

  8. I’m sooooo excited to see this come out you have no idea! I’m at the edge of my seat! Finally no need to use GIMP or Photoshop to colour. It can get a bit… complicated too quickly. 🙂

  9. I stumbled on this while looking through some animation videos on YouTube. From what I’ve seen, it looks like a tool by animators FOR animators – even for me a weekend warrior. I hope you are able to bring this to life. May I even suggest working in a trial version as well to get those tire kickers excited about what it can do and how it can handle; or even if it goes up on the App store for Mac, in-app purchases. That seems to be a great model for those on a limited budget (thinking all inclusive and big picture).

Anyway, here’s encouragement to get this started!

    Cheers,
    Russ

  10. So glad to see you didn’t abandon the idea of the new app.
I will gladly support you on kickstrater like i did back then on indiegogo !

Can’t wait to see more 🙂

    1. Niels Krogh Mortensen

Hi Stranger – sorry for the very slow approving of your message. It got lost. 😉

I was actually planning on launching the Kickstarter this fall. But I have had to postpone it, due to personal stuff. I think about this project every day and it is certainly not forgotten! I want to do it after new years… Look out for official announcements at this site and in our Facebook group.

  11. Do you have a feed for this blog? I’d like it. Good luck with the software. Love the old one.

Actually! Just port the old one to Mac. Ha! I’d be real psyched.

  12. Hi.
I feel it is becoming disappointing to my point of view every time I coming back to this website and realized that The Look-Out-The_New-Website_Coming-Up is no yet here!…
And the first announce for the new site was made on July. Come on, it is about six (6) month period and nothing new?….

So, I am out of this future kick-start or new website, or whatever.
I don’t really understand why do you people glue people at your website in order for them to see a new website, a new idea, something like that, but it seems that you/your team has no time at all for building a new website?
IF building a new website takes soooo long for you, I don’t see you’ll be able to develop a software from zero,… well not at least in my life time I guess.

So, I am out of all of this.
Best of luck for the rest of you folks

    1. Niels Krogh Mortensen

      Yeah, I know… 🙁

Every day I think of Animation Paper, and I think of the promised website that I truly was only a few days from finishing when I wrote this. I am by my self with this project and only I can move it forward. I feel a strong urge and responsibility to make it happen for all of you and for my self. Before I get the project up and running I WILL be alone in this. And even though I THINK of this all the time – I admit I haven’t been able to spend more than a few minutes a day (mainly answering questions from all you good people).

The reason for this is personal. Last spring I became a dad (again) and my life turned up side down (again). While my baby son is so little (and absolutely amazing!) he needs the attention of my wife and my self. At the same time I am working on other projects to be able to pay our bills. We are now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, so things are definitely progressing nicely. And I am optimistic about the future of Animation Paper. I know we MUST make happen. And I know I need to hurry up and get my shit together. 😉

I am so grateful for all the encouraging words I get all the time. And I thank you all for your patience. The bottleneck is me. But this will change once I get just a few days of free time to get the ball rolling again. This will not be long now. 🙂 – Sorry. And thanks again.

  13. Congrats on the new kid! Family is so important, never feel bad about taking time for them! On that note, don’t let this die! I check this website every week for something new, and I’m impressed you actually reply to comments, it shows that PAP really is on your mind. Now lets get some new material! You can do it Niels!

Might I suggest if your really serious about getting this off the ground quickly, that you bring in a few more people. I absolutely understand family and needing lucrative projects, but this thing is not gonna come together in a couple free weekends. Especially if your doing it alone. Think about it.

Animation Paper is great! I have a MAC but I sometimes sneak my roommates PC just so I can practice traditional animation on PAP.

You got this Niels! Can’t wait to see the new Site soon.

  14. If your Animation Paper App Website has changed and is new, I will go and see it and I will get everyone to pledge money to support your new Animation Paper app and once that the Animation Paper App is here, I am sure that Walt Disney Animation Studios will start using that app for its legendary hand-drawn animation it will revive in the future.

  15. Congratulations on your new addition Niels! In lieu of the transcendental, I have found no greater joy than having a child! So, having said that, perhaps I can shed more light in your direction; I’m sure you’ve heard of the phrase ‘ it takes a community to raise a child ‘ well, guess what Niels, you’re actually giving birth to your 3rd child, and it’s name is Animation Paper 5.0! You can’t do it alone! Get some help! What can we do to help ‘induce’ this labour, so we can all say ” what a beautiful baby you’ve given birth to, your child has made so many people happy “? Your wife may have given birth to two other children, but this one is yours Niels! It’s overdue! How can we help?

    1. Niels Krogh Mortensen

Thanks for writing this. Still I need to do a few things my self – and then your and everybody’s help will get us the rest of the way. I will keep your point in mind. I’m sure it will help me along the way… Thanks again.

    1. Niels Krogh Mortensen

Yes. The whole point is that it is made for the pro animator, with all he/she needs to do the best hand drawn animation. But only this. It will be simple and light weight, – and super fast and efficient to work with.

I’m sure you will feel at home very quickly because of the intuitive, uncluttered and easy interface/functionality. So, yes, it is indeed for the non tech savvy. You will need some basic drawing and animation skills – but Animation Paper will be the perfect tool for improving and training your skills – wether you are an animation master or a beginner.

  16. You know, since this is going pretty slow, you could lend your hand with the development of Pencil2d. It’s getting attention again and there are a few people working on stabilizing it.
As it stands, your posts seem like empty promises. Because you aren’t really saying what it is you still need to finish, just that it’s amazing and that we need to wait… and a wink ;). I mean, I get it, you are a father, you don’t have time and that’s fine. But how can we expect to have you devoted to this, when you can’t even get around to finishing your new website?

  17. How many of the features of the last PAP are you planning to keep? I really think it’d be beneficial to keep things such as the option to extend the exposure by dragging down, or the cutout animation feature.

  18. I know you’ve got family life to deal with and that’s cool, but in the event you are able to get your Kickstarter up and running, a good place to start might be a site called Prefundia. It’s lets people make pages about their crowdfunding projects before they officially air them, to create hype and interest. I think more attention is exactly what Animation Paper needs.

  19. Is the new website ever happening? …Is that even still a thing? it was supposed to be “days from now” last July, and here we are 9 months later with nothing … Did I miss a Cancelation announcement? should I just stop checking for it at this point?

  20. I would like to see the new website. When is the new website going to come? I would like to see it. Could you please not stand there and hurry up?

  21. Why don’t you release Animation paper as open source? The development would go faster, it would help gather a bigger community around it, and you would still be able to sell it: Just like Opentoonz, the company who makes toonz released it as open source, but they also distribute a premium version that has all the added benefits of open source development along with a profit. Just a thought.

  22. What’s left to build on the new site? What’s left to build for PAP? Everything? Nothing? Have we been in the concept stages for the past year? Is there any sort of accurate timeline for when things will actually happen?

    1. Niels Krogh Mortensen

I have had funding issues and not much time in general. So website and development has been almost on hold. But I am now very close to be able to publish news – and then a timeline. Things will hopefully soon switch into a completely other gear. Stay tuned. 🙂
