Cutting Tool Auto-Deselect

Hey I use the cutting tool a lot when it comes to adjusting the position of objects in frame, moving them up or down slightly or just altering character facial features to match up better with previous frames. The way that it works currently is as soon as I'm done adjusting where the object is, I'll click off the selected area and it immediately switches to the drawing tool I was using before the cutting tool.

Ideally, with my workflow this would just keep the cutting tool selected so I can use it for the next frame or what have you, but right now most of the time it leads to me drawing a massive circle on the frame I'm on before reselecting the tool manually over and over again. It's understandable if this is a change that feels unnecessary or wouldn't work for everyone, but if it behaved more like the pen and eraser where it wouldn't switch to another tool after using it it would make the process a lot smoother overall, at least in regards to how I use the program.

Exceptional program overall though, looking forward to further development.

Thanks for your comment and for explaining in detail. Appreciated!

I do understand where you are coming from, however how it works now works well for most usages, so to be honest I don't see a compelling enough reason to change anything, sorry.

In your situation, just hitting X (to get the cutter and begin drawing the lasso), seems to me to be effective and easy. But, please get back to me if you disagree - I am listening! By the way, did you know you can also hit A, to pick up all of your drawing instantly? Maybe that would work well for you as an alternative to lassoing everything with a big circle?

Everything in Animation Paper fits and works together in certain ways according to the vision and style of the program, as do more or less all software. I do think, and hope, it is mostly a matter of learning the ins and outs and getting your muscle memory tuned in.

I hope you understand my point of view. Please let me know.

Thanks,
Niels

Oh it's entirely understandable, and for most cases selecting everything with A wouldn't help all that much, I usually work with multiple assets in any given scene and moving all of them isn't all that necessary. This is purely from the POV of someone who goes into programs with the intention of using keyboards sparingly. I might just switch one of the buttons on my tablet to X for the program, or continue manually selecting with right click on my pen. Thank you for the prompt response!

I see, thanks.

So if you are not using shortcut keys too much, maybe you would find the Speed Dial usable? You can configure it to have the Cutter in, say, down direction, so do a right click and a quick swipe down - to activate the cutter. It's faster than it sounds 😉 Anyway, I always try to give people ideas and alternatives - not sure this will work for you. But maybe. Hopefully.

I've been using that as is, you're all good.
