Are there plans for a ruler tool?
Quote from itsaneve on April 13, 2026, 8:16 pmHey! I'm not sure if this is the right spot for this question, but I was just wondering if there were plans to include a ruler/straight line tool in the full version. This has become my favorite animation program and I love how it feels to use, but I find myself missing straight lines for guides and perspective stuff. Thanks for the great work! 🙂

Quote from Niels on April 13, 2026, 11:05 pmThanks a lot for this input of yours! It has been mentioned to me a few times before - and so we do have it on our todo list. It will not be part of the finished v5.0 unfortunately (because it is feature locked by now) - however we plan to have it implemented in one of the next point-updates (5.1, 5.2, or 5.3).
Thanks for mentioning it!
Best,
Niels

Quote from Niels on April 13, 2026, 11:11 pm... I forgot to ask: How would you like it to work exactly? I mean, by holding a key while drawing or something like that - or set a start point, then the end point and the line would appear - or having like a "physical" (virtual) ruler that you could manipulate and put at the correct position and then if you draw a line near it, you will automatically get a straight line that follows the ruler? I'm just spewing random ideas 🙂 If you have a way that works best for you - please describe it! 😉

Quote from Bluelark on June 14, 2026, 2:37 amI know this thread was started by someone else, but I've thought about what I'd do with a ruler tool. The things I've tried animating with straight lines have been characters holding an umbrella and a sword. For the umbrella, it would be great if the tool could make replicable parallel lines. And for the sword, I had to make it symmetrical, so I could have used a tool where you could predict and adjust the straight line before you drew it. I've never used a virtual ruler, but maybe that could cover both of those?
Also, my most frequent use of straight lines has just been to establish the ground or head height in a static layer. I've used other art software where you press a key while drawing a straight line, and the line snaps to the nearest standardised angle. Something like that, or just a way to get perfectly horizontal or vertical lines, would be good.
