Sure. That’s a risk – but I’m working very hard to avoid that. 😉

Came to think about it – and actually it wouldn’t have to be different. You could just see Esc a “cancel” – back to how it was. That would be the same for both cutter and lasso.

One reason as to why we have made it as it is now, might be because of the legacy of the old PAP. People loved how they could quickly cut a larger area out and just get rid of it. I.E. a way to erase something quickly without using the slower eraser tool. I know you could do that with your suggestion just hitting delete. But it was escape in PAP… Hmmm…

The way it works in AP now, is meant to be like Photoshop and so many other similar paint programs, but with one or two fewer steps in the process. When you draw a lasso in PS, you would then use Ctrl C or Ctrl X to copy or cut your lassoed area. Then you would paste to have access to move it around. If you then press Esc you would lose your selection, but if you used cut, it would still have that cut (blank) area. I don’t have PS in front of me right now, so I’m not entirely sure 😉 Am I mistaking?

Anyway, thanks for giving me stuff to think about! 😉

    Much appreciated Sam! Thank you.

You got a point. I will have to think about this some more. One concern I have is that to me it would be strange to have the esc functionality being different after picking up with lasso or cutter. I would think you would get used to how it works (one way or the other) but you would have to be conscious about how you picked the floating selection up before using esc.

Thanks Sam! This sounds like a bug.

Are you able to get it to do this consistently after  a few specific steps? In other words, how can I reproduce this?

And another thing: (Sorry if you already mentioned this elsewhere) What hardware and OS are you using?

    Thank you!

Yes, hitting Escape is how you exit your floating selection without stamping it down. If you need it back at some point you can hit Shift Escape.

How the lasso/cutter/floating-selection stuff are working is of course done with intend. It is supposed to work in the most effective way. You might not agree, so I am super interested in how you would you like it. How would it work, if it was completely up to you?

    Thanks a lot Sam!

    Best,
    Niels

Cool! Thanks for your suggestions, Leon!

The Shift thing for doing lines is already on our todo-list. Having more control over the grids and even making them 3D in some way for perspective and spherical effects, would be great. Noted!

    Thanks,
    Niels

OK, thanks for letting me know Josh! I’m glad it worked out.

And thanks for your nice words. 😉

    Hi Josh,

Are you sure your headphones are connected through Bluetooth?

Does this happen only when playing audio with Animation Paper or with other software too?

    Thanks,
    Niels

Yeah, I’m sure you are right and nothing is to be found here on layer groups. I get these suggestions everywhere 🙂 Social media, YouTube, email, DM, etc.

Thank you once more Sam! Much appreciated.

I know it is not the same, but in a way, your first point is somewhat doable already. I mean, you can draw outside the frame – or stamp down floating selections outside too. Then pick it all up and scale it down or move it gradually into frame again if needed.

Layer groups has been mentioned by others too. It makes a lot of sense – and it is on our todolist for future releases.

    Cheers,
    Niels

Yeah, that would be a possibility. I’ll think about it.

In the meantime you could use H instead (hand tool), it seems it would work much better for you?

    Hi Sam, thanks for this!

It is not possible with the current version. It is on our todo-list though.

I care about making the way it works the right way – I mean, what tends to be the right way for almost everyone. You’d be surprised how much we all think alike – how much we prefer our UX the same way, when you get into the fine detail of things.

That’s also why I keep going on, to make sure we are on the same page. If I can avoid it, I will not just do an option or preference setting, because more often than not, it turns out there is one way that people actually agree is the best way. Which is often the most efficient and intuitive way.
