KeymasterThanks for the extra info Suzie. Very helpful.
To be clear: Did it crash the first time you tried to save after you imported audio? And did you manage to save your animation successfully before you added the audio?
Cheers,

KeymasterHi Suzie,
It is actually not a matter of your drawing being large. Animation Paper handles enlarging drawings very well, because the drawings will not degrade or blur in any way when scaled up. That’s one of the magic things about Animation Paper.
The problem is that copying using lasso will multiply the amount of data in a frame (drawing), so if you keep doing this over and over you risk having your data for a particular drawing increase exponentially. This is what the warning is about. Also the filesize of your scene can “suddenly” be very large because of this.
So, it is better practise to not use the lasso extensively. Try to just draw your frames from scratch using the lighttable for reference. Or copy drawings using copy/paste in the X-Sheet – meaning you copy whole drawings (frames).
I hope this makes sense. I know it seems like a weird problem. But it reflects how the Animation Paper drawing engine is built. There’s plenty of positive reasons why we did it this way, but the drawback is that you can not rely too much on the lasso and therefore multiplying data in a single drawing.
We are closely following how many people have these problems you are experiencing, so we might end up doing two modes or something, so it is up to the user to decide how things should work internally. The bottom line is we want to keep things simple and easy to use. So we’ll see.
So for now you can trace your problem-drawings to reset them to not fill up memory and require too much CPU-power. You asked about “tracing”? I just mean tracing, as in adding a new layer and drawing on top of the old layer. You are probably doing this anyway, when you do passes refining your drawings, cleaning them up or inking them. Once you have your new “clean” layer, you can get rid of the old one, and you will see a huge drop in memory usage and filesize (and performance when lassoing).
I hope this is helpful. Let me know if you need me to elaborate or if you have further questions.
Thanks a lot,
NielsBy the way: I know this is technical and annoying: But if you, instead of stamping and lassoing again, reuse the same lassoed drawing it will not get as bad. 😉 I mean, if you are simply “zooming” into something you are maybe using the same drawing anyway? You can get your latest floating selection back using Shift Esc on your keyboard. Or you can stamp, while holding Shift, to not loose (keep) your floating selection in the first place.

KeymasterWe are working on color right now. But it is a large area, so it will take a couple of alpha releases to be complete. But it is happening now and alpha 4 and alpha 5 will be the ones for all the coloring.

KeymasterSorry for my super slow answer this time! It works here. Could you try again please?
If it still doesn’t work, here’s the same link: https://animationpaper.com/register-pre-release/
Let me know how it goes?

KeymasterOh. This is not good (obviously). Thanks for reporting this too Suzie. We must find this bug asap.

KeymasterThanks a lot Morfy Morfy. I couldn’t agree more.
The sliding of the waveform up/down is on our immediate todo (was supposed to be part of alpha 3 but we had to leave it for the next release).
The rest of what you are saying is definitely something we would like to do for the future. It’s on our list too.

KeymasterHappy it worked! Thanks, Tarun!
Yes, you are right, you need to drag out a bunch of clones to reveal the audio waveform and be able to listen to it. We are debating this behaviour and might change it. Thanks for giving me your opinion. Definitely appreciated.
Off-pegs isn’t working using the keys? Wow, we were not aware of this. It works on my test computers here.
You are on Windows 8.1. What kind of hardware/computer are you using? It will be helpful for us to know a bit more, to help find the problem. Thanks a lot!

KeymasterHi Sakura,
If you look, there’s a link in the small window, where it asks for the activation key. Just click the link and you can submit your email and receive your activation key right away.
Let me know how it goes.

KeymasterHi again Tarun,
Can I get you to try this: Uninstall all copies of Animation Paper. Reboot. Install Alpha 3.1. Reboot. Does it run properly now?
Cheers,

Everything from the old PAP has been up for consideration – I wanted the modern version of PAP so to speak. Generally speaking, PAP is in a few areas built on outdated conventions. Also some of it’s features could be done simpler and/or more efficient. So that’s what I have done with Animation Paper.
A good example is how you work with blue and black pencil. I mean, in a way it works the same, but it is less complicated, easier to work with and aligns better with modern conventions. In Animation Paper you do this blue/black thing too: Use the blue pencil for your rough pass and then clean it up on top using black. If you need another pass, you can turn your black lines blue and do another refinement pass in black. Exactly the same as you are used to with PAP. In PAP you were stuck with a pseudo layer, where black and blue was technically the same layer, so the black lines were always on top of blue, and the blue lines would be destroyed by the black lines. Having them on actual separate layers is both simpler and better. At least that’s my opinion. 🙂
So to turn your blue lines to black, you just click the little gizmo at the top of the layer column in the X-Sheet – and select the color you want the lines changed to.
How you reach each function (tool icon) is going to be highly customizable in Animation Paper (coming soon in one of the next alpha releases). Especially the Speed Dials will be great (comparable to the “marking menus” in PAP).
Let me know what you think?

KeymasterGood evening, Mike! 😉 (Greetings from Denmark) 🙂
Thanks for your HUGE suggestions! 🙂 Much appreciated. These are all features that we already have on our consider list.
The line tool is probably going to get in pretty soon, but symmetry, perspective and other things in that category are waiting for more immediately needed features, like coloring. 🙂 Also I want to keep the simplicity intact, so I need to balance it all. So we’ll see! Thanks a lot for your input!

KeymasterNo problem 🙂 I’m sure the Huion comes with some kind of driver you have to install. Shouldn’t be a problem though.
You can use any program to help you do lip-sync, but if it was me I would rather do it “by hand” because the performance of your character is so much more than just getting the poses of the mouth in sync. You need to analyse the voice and emotion of it anyway to do the complete facial expressions and get your character to “act” well. Import your voice track into Animation Paper and listen to it over and over again. Draw your key poses and drag out clones so your key poses match the audio. Then you experiment with alternative poses/expressions or you can just start filling in drawings between your keys with more mouth poses until you have all of your animation done. 🙂 Lip sync is both simple and complicated at the same time. 🙂

KeymasterHi Suzie!
Thanks a lot for your questions – not silly at all!
1. It depends on your preference. Many people, including my self, like it better to draw on a tablet with a screen, like a Wacom Cintiq or a Huion. You have better visual feedback this way. On the other hand the good thing about drawing on a tablet placed on your table and looking at what you draw on your computer screen is that your hand is not blocking anything. 🙂
About working digitally (as opposed to physical paper), I find it is a matter of getting-used-to, but also a matter of weighing pro and cons. Paper is great for the natural feel of course. However, you get so much from working digitally drawing directly onto the screen, like instant linetesting (just hit play), perfect erasers, undo, lasso and copying things, trying stuff out and saving multiple versions, refining your drawings and animation easily and endlessly, much faster workflow, etc, etc. I’m sure others can add to these points. 😉
Yes, Huions work great with Animation Paper.
2) Yes, you can easily import sketches drawn on paper. You need to have them scanned or taken as photos into your computer first as png’s or jpg’s. Name your files with numbers, so they sort as a sequence. In Animation Paper you just hit Import and select all your images in one go. They will automatically import in sequence on a new “reference” layer. You can then time everything, so you make each drawing hold for one or more frames. Then add a new layer (or more) on top to trace them, clean them up with “ink” or add breakdowns or inbetweens as well if you want to. A the end you can color your drawing as well and import a background (or foreground). (Coloring is coming in one of the next alpha releases).
In short: Yes! 😉
Let me know if what I said makes sense. 🙂 You are most welcome to get back to me with further questions.
